Washing Machines

from Sonic of Objects by Dr. don Ath

about

The washing machine became a real musical instrument at the dawn of the twentieth century, when German plumber and inventor Karl Louis Krauss developed a special washing machine with a drum that was no longer solid but had a hole, with many holes where water could flow in and out at the same time. From then on, washing machines began to sing, making strange sounds that were due to the small holes. The first automatic washing machines appeared after World War II and powerful electric motors really brought these watery flutes to life. The big breakthrough came when washing machines were able to operate as centrifuges. The sound of washing machines is mainly influenced by what is being spun in the washing drum, whether it is washing clothes or shoes. The modern washing capsule makes washing machines sing a bit more chiselled, so it is highly recommended for connoisseurs.
