Sewing machines

about

In the USA, on 4 November 1856, Sylvester H. Roper was granted a patent called the „Sewing Machine”. The patent model of the invention is on display in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. This sewing machine became one of the world's most famous sewing machines after its distinctive shape was captured by Salavador Dali in his lithograph "Al Machine a Coudre". Roper's sewing machine, which retailed for $100, used two needles with hooked tips that alternately gripped the thread and formed the stitch. There is no working example of Roper's sewing machine, so its sound is unknown. But Salvador Dali's image survives and we can dream of the sound of this strange-looking sewing machine, as the siren riding on the backs of dolphins and and the blonde woman dancing might have been heard.
