We are embarking on a new sonological art project, presenting the sounds of different objects of use. First, we experimented with bread knives to show that everyday objects can also have surprising sounds.

Knife making is a true art, which is about material selection, blade shaping, sharpening, forging, grinding and heat treatment. Knives are made by various methods such as forging, chipping, forge welding or casting. Knifemaking is an ancient skill that has been practised for thousands of years by cultures around the world. The knifemaker heats the blade to a high temperature, usually above 800°C, and then quenches it in oil or water to harden it. This process makes the blade more durable and wear resistant. The maker can temper the blade to reduce brittleness and improve toughness. During knife making, thousands of tiny sounds are created by the quality of the steel alloy used, typically a combination of carbon and iron, as well as other special added elements.
