Blood pressure monitors

about

Today's newest automatic blood pressure monitors no longer use Korotkov sounds to determine blood pressure readings. The Russian Nikolai Korotkov first demonstrated the method of measuring blood pressure by sound at a seminar in St Petersburg in 1905. A fully compressed artery makes no sound, only when the blood pressure cuff is released and the pressure equalises does the sound produced by the vessel appear, a loud knocking sound. The first loud knocking sound heard is the Korotkov 1 sound, indicating the onset of systolic blood pressure, the complete cessation of the sound indicates diastolic blood pressure, this is the Korotkov 5 sound. Modern blood pressure monitors detect a change in pressure of 1-2 mm Hg amplitude in the cuff of the blood pressure monitor due to the movement of the vessel wall. These oscillometric blood pressure monitors can detect pressure changes as small as 0.05 mm Hg, but only give accurate results if the heart rhythm is regular.
